ChatGPT Adds Product Discovery

ChatGPT have announced the launch of product recommendations in their search results.

This will include personalised product recommendations using past information that it knows about you and will also have built in price comparison and a buy button that will take you to the website’s product page providing a similar experience to Google Shopping, but with more personalisation.

This is a move from ChatGPT to shift more into the transactional space rather than sitting primarily in the informational and research space it has been occupying.

What you need to know:

  • This is in the early stages to expect it to evolve and improve
  • Product results are independently chosen and not advertisements.
  • Any website or merchant can have products featured in ChatGPT searches. To be discoverable, ensure your website isn’t blocking the OAI-SearchBot in the robots.txt file.
  • You can track referral traffic from ChatGPT as traffic automatically includes the UTM parameter of utm_source=chatgpt.com.
  • OpenAI is exploring a way for merchants to directly provide product feeds to ChatGPT for more accurate and up-to-date listings. Merchants can sign up to be notified when feed submissions open.

How are products chosen and displayed?

  • Product Display: ChatGPT displays product options in visually rich carousels in response to shopping-intent queries. This includes additional product details and links to purchase sites.
  • Product Selection: Products are chosen based on user intent, considering aspects like customer ratings, price, ease of use, and specific user criteria. ChatGPT uses structured metadata and third-party content for selection.
  • Descriptions and Labels: Simplified product titles, descriptions, labels, and review summaries are generated to aid user understanding. These are based on third-party data and model observations.
  • Pricing: Prices are derived from third-party providers, but may not always reflect the lowest available options. There can be delays in price and shipping term updates, and users are encouraged to report inaccuracies.
  • Merchant Selection: A list of merchants offering a product is shown when a user clicks on a product. It’s based on metadata from third-party providers without re-ranking based on price or policies.
  • Feedback and Updates: Users can provide feedback for shopping experience improvements, and OpenAI is exploring direct product feed submissions from merchants for accurate listings.
